The Importance Of Critical Thinking On College Education

The article by Boarer- Pitchford (2014) discussed the importance of critical thinking in college education and encouraged educators to use authentic assessments that require students to demonstrate the understanding of course concepts and promote the development of critical thinking based on the results of their study that examined make up of test grades derived from traditional and authentic assessment and factors that influenced the educators use of assessment techniques. On the other hand, the article by Wiggins (2013) discussed ways to help students reach high standards by rethinking the notion of mastery. While all three articles have valuable information that can be used in developing assessments and rubrics, I decided to analyze†¦show more content†¦The current trends in assessments put an emphasis on process of learning and not just the end product. In spite of this shift, similar to me, for many educators, the appropriate use of traditional and authentic assessment s is still unclear. The article by Montgomery (2002) discusses the recent shift in assessment practices and describes the importance of using authentic assessments. The authentic assessments are based on the constructivist approach that require students to actively construct knowledge and therefore, assessed using demonstration of their knowledge through application to real life or simulated projects. While traditional assessments are easy to administer and grade, these do not assess the child’s problem solving skills or critical thinking abilities. On the contrary, developing authentic tasks is not only time consuming but difficult, these assessments help to assess what students know and what they can do with the acquired knowledge. The author suggests that authentic assessments should include real-life tasks, performance and challenges that are faced by professionals in real life. In addition, the author suggests that similar product should be compared to each other using the same criteria. In addition, both process and product should be assessed and the criteria for evaluation (rubric) should be made available to students in advance. Cyberbullying: How It’s Harming Children and Adolescents Amanda was in 7th grade when her cyberbullying story began. One day she met a guy online who talked her into flashing him her breasts, a decision she regretted later. A year later, she got a message on Facebook from him that said â€Å"if you don’t put on a show for me, I will send your boobs† to everyone she knew. One day, her picture was revealed to everyone. Shortly after, she suffered from depression, anxiety and panic disorder. She also started abusing drugs and alcohol. She moved to another city, but the bullying continued, especially since the guy had made a Facebook page with her boobs as his profile picture for her new school friends to see. It is a serious problem amongst children and teens all ar ound the world. Many consider cyberbullying as merely expressing one’s thoughts which is considered freedom of speech. Many live in constant fear of what’s the next thing that’s going to be said about them. Although cyberbullying is considered freedom of speech and is therefore not breaking the law, it should ultimately be illegal because it causes low academic performance, depression and suicide in teens and young adults. Guy Montag, a fireman, comes along, and he learns about a past where people were not afraid to read and break laws and learns this all cause of a girl named Clarisse McClellan, then he meets a man named Faber who teaches him how to understand books. Then realizes what he must do. Guy Montag gains humanity because he wants to change his way of thinking as well as the thoughts of others. It describes his feelings about seeing books burned. He enjoys seeing books burn because in the book it shows that fire gives him control and power. He doesn’t care about the house he is burning but is very ecstatic. It also shows he is very self-centered for not caring about the houses and the memories people had in them. This makes him content because he does not need anything but to burn books. Guy changes because of one event that happened on one of his calls to start a fire; it was a life changing experience that changes Guy’s philosophy forever. Guy was talking to his wife, Mildred about burning the old lady with her books and how it affected him. He was disturbed by it; it made him sick. â€Å"You weren’t there, you didn’t see, there must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing† (48). Guy was deeply affected by this experience. The thought makes him sick but it also makes him curious. He now wants to read books to see why the old lady was willing to die with her books. He imagines there must be something really important that people didn’t want anyone to know, so that’s why they burn books. As a result of this Guy begins to gain humanity because he now understands what it feels like to fight for something you believe in—not burning books. Guy Montag is a round character because he changes from a fireman who burns books to stopping others from burning books. He goes to Faber’s house so he can help him understand what’s in books. They talk about helping others understand books because they don’t like the society they live in. â€Å"I don’t know. We have everything we need but aren’t happy. Something’s missing. I’ve looked around. The only thing I positively knew was gone was the books I’d burn in ten or twelve years. So I thought books might help† (78). This quote shows that Guy Montag wants to change and learn about books. So they make a plan to put books in the firehouse and set up a call so the firehouse would be burned to the ground. Guy Montag gains humanity because he wants to change his way of thinking as well as others. In the beginning of the book, Guy Montag loves to burn books. Then he meets an old woman who decides to die with her books. He wonders why she would commit suicide because she wouldn’t die for books without a reason. So he becomes curious. At the end of the book, he changes and wants to inform people about books and change the dystopian society he lives in. Humanity is something that we are all are born with. We gain or lose humanity based on the experiences we have in life. Some people’s humanity is better off than others. Change can happen to anyone at anytime in their life. Guy Montag proves that it’s never too late to change the wrongs you have done.
